More Details

Euphorbia oblongata is the all round best-looking, longest-flowering foliage plant you can find anywhere in the world. It forms the base of 95% of my floral arrangements, and lines most of the beds in my garden at Perch Hill.

You never tire of their brilliant acid-green flowers and bold, strong shapes. It is really a short-lived perennial, but it flowers best in its first year, so we treat it as a hardy annual.

Please note: This is toxic if eaten. It is a skin and eye irritant.

Genus Euphorbia oblongata
Type Short-lived Perennial (Grown as a Hardy Annual)
Common Name Eggleaf spurge, Oblong spurge
Border Position Middle, Front
Soil Type Neutral
Scent Unscented
Site Full Sun
Moisture Moist but Well-drained
Height 60cm (24in)
Spacing Thin to 40-45cm (15-18in). 60cm (24in) spread.
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow under cover in Feb-April and September. Sow direct or plant out in April and August.
Care Tips Cut stems back as they brown to allow room for new growth. Can withstand a touch of frost and can be sown/planted straight into the ground in the autumn and will keep through the winter without protection. In colder areas you may wish to cover seedlings or keep in a cold frame/unheated greenhouse.
Flowering May - December, 16 weeks from spring sowing of seed.
Vase Life 7-10 days. Soak overnight and sear the stems for 30 seconds to stop the sap leaking out. Take care when picking, wear gloves and avoid white sap which can burn.
Harvesting Flower production: 8 months.

I did order these rather late in the season as seedlings, so they have taken a while to establish & flower, but now they have got going I am so pleased. Lime green is such a great colour anywhere in the garden. I'll be ordering more next year. PS - I've grown mine in pots. They would probably be even better in the ground.
