This is my number one cut flower foliage plant, which forms the base of 80% of my mixed arrangements.
You never tire of their brilliant acid-green flowers and bold, strong shapes. It is really a short-lived perennial, but it flowers best in its first year, so we treat it as a hardy annual. Cut with care and use gloves to avoid milky sap.
If you have ordered these seeds, we have had unforeseen delays and they will now be available late February. We apologise for any inconvenience.
Genus | Euphorbia oblongata |
Group/Species | oblongata (syn. corallioides) |
Type | Perennial |
Common Name | Eggleaf spurge, Oblong spurge |
Border Position | Cutting Garden |
Soil Type | Broad Tolerance |
Scent | Unscented |
Site | Full Sun |
Moisture | Moist but Well-drained |
Height | 45cm (18in) |
Spacing | 60cm (24in) |
Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Sow under cover in Feb-April and September. Sow direct or plant out in April and August. For best results, grow Euphorbia in full sun or partial shade, in rich, moist, well-drained soil. Treat it as a short lived perennial or an annual and compost when past its best. |
Care Tips | Cut stems back as they brown to allow room for new growth. There's just one word of warning with any euphorbia - pick it with your washing up gloves on. Its milky sap can cause an allergic reaction, particularly on a hot sunny day. |
Flowering | May - December, 16 weeks from spring sowing of seed. |
Vase Life | 7-10 days. Soak overnight and sear the stems for 30 seconds to stop the sap leaking out. Take care when picking, wear gloves and avoid white sap which can burn. |
Harvesting | Flower production: 9 months. |

Reviewed 5th December 2018 by Christine This is a fabulous plant! A real pop of colour. I grow mine on my allotment as part of my cutting garden and it looks wonderful in a vase with some of my lovely Sarah Raven dahlias! It would look wonderful as part of a border display too. It is still looking good at the moment (early December) and I would recommend it to anyone for any garden. |

I was hoping to use them for a wedding bouquet but having picked it, seared the ends and put it in water I found that when I used it the next day in the trial bouquet it drooped quite quickly. Maybe There is a better Euphorbia I could use ? |
Reviewed 17th September 2018 by Penny Beautiful healthy plants as usual. Thank you. |
Reviewed 17th September 2018 by ANN Didn,t really thrive as I had hoped. The hot summer should have made them flourish better as they were watered regularly and in a good spot in the garden. Reviewed 17th September 2018 by Nina It's much harder to grow these from seed. Having the jumbo seedlings arrive at just the right moment in the spring, meant I could plant them out in exactly the right positions at the front of my tropical-gravel garden. They have bushed out beautifully and framed the pots and exotic flowers all summer. |

Brilliant planted along the border
Reviewed 12th June 2018 by Anu Bhatt I bought 10 plants two years ago and they are still going strong after the cold winter lasted year. I left the top foliage on over winter and in March, there were shoots emerging from the base of the plant. So it was easy to prune out the old stems. The plants are all up to full height within a couple of months and blooming beautifully. I’ve ordered more plants to line another border now:) |
Brilliant Euphorbia
Reviewed 10th June 2017 by Sue Clark I bought 5 seedlings last year out of curiosity really as I'd never heard of this plant, although I have other perennial euphorbias in my garden. Last summer the seedlings all did really well and filled out wonderfully, and to my astonishment, as I thought they should be treated as annuals, went through our Yorkshire winter ! Now they're looking fabulous so earlier this year I sent for another five which are doing well too. I am so pleased with them and being shorter than some euphorbias they're great for providing foliage colour in a vase of summer flowers. Plus I think lime green in a garden is always a bonus. Definitely recommended. |
easy to grow outdoors
Reviewed 15th July 2016 by Sophie Cooke To begin with, I was a bit disappointed at how slow/patchy the germination was: I was starting them off indoors (just a few), and it wasn't a success. So I took the couple that had germinated, and then also sowed other seed direct into the ground in May. We are in Scotland so maybe this is April elsewhere ;) Completely delighted to find that pretty much all the seed I sowed direct outdoors has now sprouted into pretty lime green plants along my borders. |
euphorbia
Reviewed 5th September 2015 by Lorraine cooper this is the first year I have grown this and will definitely do so again. It looks great in a vase complementing other cut flowers and lasts really well. It also looks good at the front of perennial beds. It has been a little slow to get going so start early! |
Love It!
Reviewed 2nd August 2015 by Rachel Okwechine I did order these rather late in the season as seedlings, so they have taken a while to establish & flower, but now they have got going I am so pleased. Lime green is such a great colour anywhere in the garden. I'll be ordering more next year. PS - I've grown mine in pots. They would probably be even better in the ground. |
