A truly marvellous new dahlia that we had filling the garden at Perch Hill last year. Hugely recommended.

Variety | Totally Tangerine |
Type | Tender Perennial Tuber |
Common Name | Dahlia |
Border Position | Back, Middle |
Bulb Size | I |
Soil Type | Acid, Chalky, Fertile, Neutral |
Scent | Unscented |
Site | Full Sun |
Moisture | Moist but Well-drained |
Height | 80cm (32in) |
Spacing | Plant just under the soil surface, 75cm (30in) apart. |
Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Pot them up undercover March or early April in a generous pot (at least 2 litre) filled with multi-purpose potting compost. Place them in a light, frost-free place and keep the compost moist. Pinch out their growing tips when they have reached about 8" tall. They will have formed bushy plants by the time the frosts have ended and will be in flower by the beginning of July. If you don’t have anywhere to grow the potted tubers, you can put them straight into the ground when the frosts are nearly over, mulching them or protecting with a cloche or protective horticultural fleece if the foliage appears before the frosts are over, but this will delay flowering. |
Care Tips | Support with a stout stick, tie in every couple of weeks. In the south you can mulch deeply and overwinter them in the ground, alternatively, lift and overwinter your dahlias frost free undercover. |
Flowering | July - November |
Vase Life | Only pick dahlias in full flower. Recut the hollow stem ends under water to avoid airlocks. |
Cooking Notes | All dahlia flowers are edible. I use the petals scattered over salad and to decorate a range of puddings. |

Lovely flowers
Reviewed 3rd November 2018 by Caroline I loved Totally Tangerine when I saw it at Perch Hill in 2017. I ordered it as part of the William Morris Collection in 2018 and potted it up in a 3 litre pot when it arrived and kept the pot indoors. By the end of April the plant was ready to go out but kept it inside until the frosts had finished towards the end of May. ( in Berkshire). This variety was the first to flower on 2nd June. It flowered all summer and was delightful. I grew it in a bed. It needs to be near the front of a bed of dahlias because it’s shorter than many. It would be good in a large pot. |
Beautiful and prolific
Reviewed 2nd September 2018 by Laura Simmonds-Read I love this dahlia. Planted it in a pot in March/ April time and it started flowering from late July. Now in September, its still covered in flowers. Its bringing colour to the garden as we head into autumn and everything is dying back. The petals are beautiful with colours from purple on the tip, through orange and into pink at the base. |
Perfect Plant
Reviewed 25th August 2018 by Cynthia Edwards This dahlia is a perfect size for a smallish pot. It started flowering early and has never been without flowers and buds. There have been no blank periods as with some other dahlias. It is still going strong with lots of buds to open whilst I am still waiting for a first flower on some other varieties. Wonderful. |
Disappointed
Reviewed 15th July 2018 by Lynda
I bought a 3 litre pot of Totally Tangerine along with a 3 litre pot of Nicholas. While Nicholas continues to thrive, sadly Totally Tangerine has not. It looks really unhealthy. When I investigated, I found that the tuber had rotted. |
Outstanding
Reviewed 13th July 2017 by Deb I bought two totally tangerine dahlia plants and planted them in a large tub. I am so pleased with the result...lots of brilliant flowers and loads more buds! I am planning to buy more next year and won't be going anywhere else! Thank you! |
Such a shame
Reviewed 2nd May 2017 by Sarah Mitchell
I ordered the Venetian Collection and Totally Tangerine was the first tuber to show. Duly potted and then planted out with the other Dahlias and Tangerine was the first to flower - I live in the sunny south - I was thrilled to see such a beauty. Then disaster struck and on investigating a very sick looking plant, found the tuber had rotted. |
Non Stop Flowers
Reviewed 13th August 2016 by Sue Alexander Fantastic number of flowers produced and for so long. Prolific. And these did not seem to attract the slugs in the same way that some others did. Very happy with this purchase. |
