Very reliable and long-flowering, covered in light blue flowers from late June until the end of August. Fantastic with climbing roses or, as you'll see it in my favourite garden at Great Dixter, growing up through shrubs. It also does well in a large pot.
Genus | Clematis |
Group/Species | Late Large-flowered Group |
Variety | Prince Charles |
Type | Deciduous Climber |
Border Position | Climber |
Soil Type | Chalky, Neutral |
Scent | Unscented |
Site | Full Sun, Part Shade |
Moisture | Moist but Well-drained, Well-drained |
Height | 2m (6ft 6in) |
Spacing | 1.2m (4ft) |
Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Clematis prefer moist, well-drained soil with the base of the plant in shade and growth tips in light. Add plenty of organic matter to the soil before planting. Try mulching around the base to offer protection from heat and light. Will require support on a wall or in the border over which it can climb. |
Care Tips | Pruning group 3 - flowers on the current season's growth so cut back hard in early spring to a healthy pair of buds 30cm (12in) above the ground and apply a mulch of compost or well-rotted manure. Tie in new shoots to a trellis or other suitable support. Will benefit from a regular liquid feed throughout the growing season. Read Sarah's article for more information on how to prune clematis. |

Reviewed 15th August 2019 by Deborah Not such good quality lots of brown leaves and the colour on the flowers are not very bright. Reply from the Sarah Raven Team:"Thank you for leaving your review. Reviewed 3rd August 2019 by Christine I bought two clematis. One is doing OK but the other wilted straight away. With some coaxing it has revived but is clearly a very poor relation to the other. I am thinking of pulling it out and replacing it with a new one. |
Reviewed 1st August 2019 by Clare Plants all arrived in good condition, clematis doing well; dahlia tubers planted in the greenhouse. So far so good. |

Clematis 'Prince Charles'
Reviewed 25th June 2018 by Busy gardener Mine was planted at the end of March against a pergola and has now reached six foot and is covered in beautiful blue flowers. I chose it because it is long flowering so look forward to many more weeks of flowers! |
