An Easter in Brittany

We spend our holidays at our beach house in Brittany.  Easter can be a little hit or miss weather wise, but it is wonderful to be able to walk across the empty sand dunes with only the dog for company.

Like many Garlic & Sapphire readers I love seasonal food and I'm fortunate that in Brittany it is really easy to source wonderful ingredients. If I don’t have time when I first arrive to visit the market in St Pol de Leon, I know that the supermarket carries a huge range of local Breton produce, as well as having an overflowing seafood counter.

On Easter Sunday, we tuck into Spider Crab and Brown Crab, both are utterly delicious and simple to cook.   (If you look at my blog A Trifle Rushedthere are detailed instructions for preparing seafood available.) I usually serve them simply with fresh soda bread and a home-made mayonnaise.

While in Brittany, I try to cook something traditionally British (and seasonal) for my French neighbours.  I’d never baked Hot Cross Buns, so decided to try Sarah Raven’s recipefrom Food for Friends and Family.  My family adored them, “the best hot cross buns ever!”  They will definitely be a hit with our Breton friends too.

 When I turned over the page, I found another scrumptious recipe for Easter Biscuits. They are really tasty, filled with raisins and cranberries as well as mixed peel and spices.  Of course the pretty shaped cutters make them even more appealing.

Happy Easter and I hope that you have sometime to relax and maybe cook something new.  I highly recommend that you try either the Hot Cross Buns or Easter Biscuits, they’re both superb.
