There's nothing nicer than the jumble of colours of these zinnia flowers in a jug on the kitchen table. The flowers are spectacular, huge and long-lasting; a wonderful mix of oranges, reds, pinks and yellows.
Zinnia elegans are one of my very favourite families for cutting, with a long picking season and excellent vase life.

Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Zinnias are best sown April-May under cover in modules or gutters to avoid root disturbance. Place somewhere warm and keep moist until germination occurs, usually within a week. Harden off before planting out after the frosts, once roots have filled their individual modules. Pinch out tips as you plant. Direct sow late May-June, zinnias hate cold nights.: |
Care Tips | Water once a week and stake plants individually - if they collapse over, they’ll never grow or flower as well as when vertically supported. Zinnias have a tendency to botrytis, especially during damp and cool weather so it is important to ensure good air circulation around plants and tidy up any dead or dying leaves and plant material. Picking or deadheading is necessary to prolong blooming and encourage branching. |
Flowering | July - first frosts, 12-14 weeks from sowing. |
Vase Life | 7 days. Strip bottom leaves. |
Harvesting | Flower production: 3 months. |

Reviewed 3rd October 2018 by Norma Safely received and strong healthy plants. They have flowered all summer long and are still producing more flowers than I have vases for, in fact I feel that for one flower picked another ten flower in its place. Highly recommended. |
Reviewed 21st September 2018 by Joyce I bought a whole bunch of plug plants and tubers in Spring, all for a clients cutting garden. I grew the plant on until they were 2/3Litre pot size. The plants were all good, strong and sturdy and I only have two that died off in around 275 plants. I was dissappointed with the dahlias though as the not all came true as per the label. I certainly didnt get the Labyrinth that I ordered. |
Reviewed 20th September 2018 by Carol Potted them up in multiple purpose compost put them in the greenhouse till the weather got better, they never really grow very well, all died in the end. |
Reviewed 19th September 2018 by Elaine My favourite plant of the summer! Such a variety of gorgeous colours. They have produced flower after flower for cutting from mid-summer onwards. Lovely long stems and pretty flowers in jewel tones. I will definitely be buying these again - either seedlings or seeds. |

Reviewed 4th September 2018 by Susan The last two are very poor and have hardly thrived even tho I have looked after them. I will not be buying seedlings again from Sarah. Very sad Reply from the Sarah Raven Team:"Thank you for leaving your review. We are very sorry to hear of your disappointment with your Zinnia and have refunded you for them." Zinnia
Reviewed 5th August 2017 by JACQUELINE BAILEY-TUFTS Have grown Zinnias before from other companies but have been quite disappointed with the results. Thought I'd give these Zinnia seeds a go and they are wonderful. Wish I'd put them further back in the beds as they have grown nice and tall, but very sturdy. |
Brilliant eye catcher
Reviewed 23rd July 2017 by Carmen Neumann I was worried these would not work having seen Sarah's video stating how warm it needs to be for them, but was pleasantly surprised. Will definitely grow more next year. |
Add that extra zing to the border
Reviewed 8th July 2017 by A Holloway Really love these especially in a south facing border where they thrive. Rich colours and strong stems which don't need supporting. Mine grow to about 60cm max. This is the third year I've grown them successfully from seed |
Brilliant colour
Reviewed 17th November 2014 by ELIZABETH WALKER Grow these every year from seed started inside. Grew to 8 ft this year and 2 are still in flower ........! Probably the most enquired after flower in our garden for its brilliant colour and rigid stems. |
