More Details

The great thing about this French sorrel is that it's perennial and is one of the first leaves to emerge in very early spring.

I can usually pick my first leaves of French Sorrel to add to a mixed leaf salad, or to flavour a delicious soup by the end of February. French Sorrel is reminiscent of spinach leaves with a slight citrussy flavour. Do an early spring sowing for spring and summer picking the first year and many years after that. Keep cutting back to prevent flowering.

Common Name French Sorrel
Soil Type Fertile
Site Full Sun, Part Shade

Sowing, Seeds, Planting Direct sow in April and August in lines or blocks. For a plentiful supply of young leaves, successive sowings are a good idea. Or sow indoors in March or September.

Storing Use within 24 hours for best flavour, or freeze.
Harvesting May-August, 6-8 weeks from sowing. The leaves will produce for 3-4 months. Chop back regularly to prevent it running to seed.
Cooking Notes Sorrel "melts" when you cook it, making it a fantastic addition to sauces and soups. Try Sarah's Moroccan harira with sorrel sauce recipe - a delicious winter stew.
