A good, healthy variety with dark green leaves that have a wonderful soft texture as well as excellent flavour.
Grow it as a cut-and-come again salad leaf, picked at the baby leaf stage, or space it more widely and harvest leaves fully grown. I find spinach does best in dappled shade.
Please note, illustrated packets are being introduced gradually over the coming months, availability may vary.
Genus | Spinacia |
Group/Species | oleracea |
Variety | Medania |
Common Name | Spinach |
Border Position | Kitchen Garden |
Soil Type | Broad Tolerance |
Site | Part Shade |
Moisture | Moist but Well-drained |
Height | 30cm (12in) |
Spacing | 30cm (12in) |
Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Sow direct March to July or August and September in rows 30cm (12in) apart for mature plants or 10-15cm (4-6in) apart for baby leaves. Cover with 1.5cm (1/2in) of fine soil. Firm gently and keep moist. For continuous crops sow every 2-3 weeks. You can also try sowing into lengths of guttering from February for planting out 4 weeks later. |
Care Tips | Spinach is best grown in partial shade in a fertile, moisture-retentive soil. Prior to sowing, prepare the area by digging in up to two bucketfuls per square metre of well-rotted organic matter such as garden compost, and raking in a general fertiliser such as Organic GroChar Fertiliser. Leaves can develop a bitter taste if grown in soil that lacks nutrients. Keep plants well-watered during hot, dry weather. |
Harvesting | March-May and September-November. 6-8 weeks from sowing. |
Cooking Notes | Enjoy baby leaves raw in salads, steam or stir-fry larger leaves. |

The best spinach I have ever grown
Reviewed 19th June 2015 by Mary Bevan I am currently harvesting masses of this lovely spinach. It has a wonderful flavour, lighter than most other spinaches, and even the larger leaves remain tender and full of flavour. I have never before managed to grow spinach that I actually liked, but I am about to order another packet of seeds of this one. My friends to whom I have given some of the leaves all agree that this is an excellent spinach. |
