The strong smell of Nicotiana tabacum protects brassicas against the large cabbage white butterfly and prevents them from laying their eggs all over your brassica leaves.
We planted it in a big block in the veg garden this summer, either side of a kale bed and even 'Cavalo Nero' (the caterpillars' favourite) has remained almost cabbage white free. I'll certainly be doing it again.
Please note: This is harmful if eaten.

Nicotiana tabacum reviews
Amazing
Reviewed 2nd January 2017 by Helen moss What a great flower to have in the garden. Believe it or not they are still in flower January 2017, tall and interesting I've grown these in pots and directly in the ground under an apple tree. Just great ,a couple of plants have over wintered under the apple tree and are now on their second winter still flowering. I thought these as just annuals but I guess the mild winters in Cornwall allow the odd miracle. Will definitely grow these again just for that reason. |
