Copper flowers are IT and never more so than when they are a perennial foxglove which flowers in the sun or shade from mid-spring to midsummer, stuffed full of nectar, like a skyscraper of cafes, one on top of another, for butterflies and bees.

Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Surface sow on trays of moist compost, press in lightly. Do not cover the seed as it needs light to germinate. Digitalis will usually germinate within 2-3 weeks at around 20°C. Prick out each seedling when large enough to handle and transplant into individual pots to grow on. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for a couple of weeks before planting out after the frosts. May also be sown direct. Plant in groups of 3 or more. Sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi (Rootgrow) into the base of the planting hole and water well after planting. |
Care Tips | After flowering cut down the main flower spikes to encourage side shoots known as 'princes'. After seed has been set cut plant to the ground and apply a mulch of organic matter. Caution: All parts of this plant are highly toxic if ingested, wear gloves when handling. |
