More Details

Eryngium alpinum is a glamorous, blue-tinged, large-flowered sea-holly, Loved by Pollinators.

Eryngiums rank with euphorbias, poppies, sunflowers and Parrot tulips as my favourite plants for cutting and for the garden. The sculpted heads in steely grey or rich royal blue are hard to beat. Grow them and grow lots of them.

Site Full Sun
Moisture Moist but Well-drained, Well-drained
Height 75cm (30in)

Sowing, Seeds, Planting Direct sow March-April and/or August-September. May need a warm-cold-warm cycle and may be slow to germinate, taking up to 80 days. Sow in the autumn for best results, in shallow pans in light soil under a cold frame. Grow seedlings on until large and strong enough to be planted outdoors into its final position in the garden. Choose a spot with fairly dry, well-drained soil that is poor to moderately fertile. Full sun is essential as is protection from winter wet. This also grows well in container pots.
Care Tips Leave the attractive seedheads on over winter. Tidy dead and decaying foliage in early spring.
Flowering July - October, the following year
Vase Life Give eryngiums a long drink in deep water. They should last for 2 weeks. Or dry in time for your Christmas table.
Harvesting Flower production: 12 weeks.
