These are THE ruffled silk poppies, a beautiful mix of oranges, pinks, reds and cream above elegant blue-silver, highly cut leaves.
They will self-seed at the front of the border and through impoverished gravel where we have them at Perch Hill. A showy, glamorous new introduction.
Genus | Eschscholzia |
Group/Species | californica |
Variety | Thai Silk Formula Mixture |
Type | Hardy Annual |
Common Name | Californinan Poppy |
Border Position | Cutting Garden |
Soil Type | Broad Tolerance |
Scent | Unscented |
Site | Full Sun |
Moisture | Well-drained |
Height | 30cm (12in) |
Spacing | 30cm (12in) |
Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Best sown direct as they dislike having their roots disturbed. Sow in spring, or in autumn for earlier flowers the following year. Make sure the ground is weed free and work the soil to a fine tilth. Sow seed thinly, allow a final spacing of 30cm (12in) to give them enough room to grow on without competition. Choose a spot with fairly dry, well-drained soil that is poor to moderately fertile. Full sun is essential as is protection from winter wet. Can also be sown under cover in gutterpipes and transplanted outside to minimise root disturbance. |
Care Tips | Great for growing in container pots or borders with poor soil where it will thrive on neglect and freely self-seed. Deadhead regularly to encourage more blooms. |
Flowering | June - September |
Harvesting | Flower production: 4 months |

Eschscholzia californica 'Thai Silk Formula Mixture' reviews
Reviewed 24th September 2019 by Julie Great service. The seeds germinated very well and the flowers were lovely. I don't think I had them in the right position in the garden as they didn't have many flowers on the plants. |

Reviewed 14th August 2019 by Sandra The plants had been over watered to the point where a thin layer of green algae had developed on the surface of the compost. I managed to salvage them by cutting back most of the foliage and re-potting them in a mix of sand and compost to see if it would dry them out and it did. I did this as they were replacements, the 1st lot was even worse. Reply from the Sarah Raven Team:"Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear that your Eschscholzia seedlings arrived in an unsatisfactory condition and have refunded you for them. Posted 16th August 2019 |
Reviewed 11th August 2019 by Andrew some arrived dead, great customer service 2nd lot arrived the same, but got some good plants between the 2 batches |
Reviewed 2nd August 2019 by Clare Great plug plants. What stunning flowers, so beautiful, wonderful contrast of foliage and flowers and the colours are amazing! If they self sow that would be wonderful, |
