Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Dig out a rectangle of soil to a depth of 15cm (6in). On heavy soil, spread a 5cm (2in) layer of grit over the bottom of the planting area and mix a barrow of compost into the soil you have removed. Scatter a little farmyard manure, green waste compost or leaf mould over the base grit layer, then space the iris bulbs 10cm (4in) apart. Keep the pointy end up and sit them firmly in position, so they don’t topple over as you spade the soil/compost mix gently over their heads. |
Care Tips | Water in well after planting. Old flower stems and any dying foliage can be cut back in autumn. Apply a mulch of garden compost or well-rotted manure in spring. Caution: harmful if eaten. |
