Product Description
This has the best flavour of any chard and looks wonderful with its chunky white-stems. Chard is one of my desert island veg because you can pick it for months on end and there are so many fantastic ways to cook it (see p392-397 Garden Cookbook). Strip the white from the green. They have different cooking times. A hugely long producing and worthwhile plant.
- Hardy annual
- EASY
- Sow: February-August
- Seeds: 175
Sowing: For a constant supply throughout the year, direct sow in April and early September. Can also sow inside, 3-4 seeds into modular trays. Thin, leaving the strongest seedling and plant out. Easy germination. Protect with cloches in winter for good quality growth. They like a rich soil, so dig in lots of organic material to planting position to help prevent this. Final Thinning/Planting Distance: Sow 3-4 seeds in stations 23cm apart. Leave 35cm between the rows. Harvesting: Harvest small leaves for salad from 8 weeks. Leaf production: All year - a brilliant cut-and-come again crop . Storing: stores well for 5 or 6 days in damp newspaper or a plastic bag in the fridge.
