Basil 'Sweet Genovese' is the best aromatic basil, with a sweet taste and soft, tender texture. Perfect raw with tomatoes and the main ingredient for a fresh pesto (see p225 of my Garden Cookbook).
In the middle of summer, when Basil 'Sweet Genovese' is growing fast, stash the flavour away in basil oil to use on pasta and salads right through the winter.

Sowing: Sow in April under cover. Pinch out growing tips so plants bulk out. Grow under cover or plant out in June when nights are warm. Final Thinning/Planting Distance: 30cm apart. Basil loves strong sun, rich soil and plenty of water. Harvesting: 6-8 weeks from sowing. Remove individual leaves or stems, don't cut the plant to the groung. Remove flowers as they appear.Leaf production: 3-4 months summer and early autumn.
