this week in the garden

  • Autumn is officially here, in all its golden glory. Preparation for winter is in full swing – fruit and autumn veg are ready to be brought in and stored, and plants should be cut back, wrapped up or brought inside to help them survive the chilly winter.

  • Squash 'Trombinico' growing in early September

September is a month of satisfying harvests, some preparation for the coming cold months, and planning for the next spring.

  • Gladioli picked in August

There's lots of pruning, deadheading and harvesting to be done in August so if you're off on your holidays make sure you get some help for your garden or plan ahead.  You can also start preparing for the autumn veg patch and start to sow flowers for next spring.

  • June is a wonderful time in the garden, flowers are starting to appear in abundance and there's plenty to harvest in the veg patch.  Keep on top of supporting your plants and keep an eye out for cold nights at this time of year as some plants will still need plenty of protection.

  • Dark, rich tulips flowering in May

In May you'll want to start tidying and cutting back your spring plants, planting out flowers and veg for summer and preparing for autumn - sowing seeds and planting out chrysanths.

  • Helleborus flowering in April

April is the busiest time in the garden, but don't panic, take things one step at a time and you'll get it all done.
