Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow April-May 2 seeds 1cm (½in) deep into a pot/module of compost. Remove weaker seedling if both grow. Plant out in June-July when seedlings are 15cm (6in) high, 60cm (24in) apart. Firm the soil well around the plant base to prevent wind rock. Seeds can also be sown into prepared seed bed in late March-mid April, in rows 15cm (6in) apart, then transplanted when 15cm (6in) tall into final position 60cm (24in) apart.
Care Tips Plant under fleece or mesh to protect from caterpillars. Protect against cabbage white butterflies and harvest plant tops too.
Harvesting Throughout the winter, November-January, when sprouts at the base are walnut-sized and tightly closed. Production: 2 months.
Cooking Notes Delicious chopped finely raw in salads, or boil gently for 8 minutes to cook through. Perfect served with something orange, to let the colours on your plate sing. The sprouting tops are edible too.
