I wanted to refine our collection of hyacinths, so visited a trial field in Holland this spring, a few miles south of Julianadorp village up in the north. There were 87 different varieties, in all their possible shapes, colours and forms.

Walking up and down the rows I quickly developed some strong opinions about what was lovely and what was less so and some clear overall rules which would help me distill 87 down to a perfect small collection for planting this autumn. Here are my final must-haves.
