More Details

Recommended to me by many foodies, Courgette 'Romanesco' is a wonderful courgette with characteristic ribs down the fruit. It has excellent flavour and texture, not ever turning watery, even when quite large.

Picked small and whole, the flavour reminds me of globe artichoke hearts. Its flowers are huge too – ideal for stuffing and dipping into tempura batter.

Do at least two sowings of courgettes, splitting your packets, so that you have fruit to pick for 3-4 months at a stretch. Sow two or three different colours so they look good in the garden and on the plate.

Genus Cucurbita pepo
Variety Romanesco
Type Half-Hardy Annual
Common Name Courgette, Summer Squash
Soil Type Neutral
Scent Unscented
Site Full Sun
Height 90cm (36in)
Spacing 90cm (36in) apart in each direction when the plants have 5-6 leaves
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Soak seed overnight and sow under cover from late March- April. Push seed, on its side (to prevent it rotting), 2-3cm deep into a 9cm pot of compost. Can be sown direct after last frosts, from May to June.
Care Tips Feed well with plenty of organic matter. Pick fruit regularly to prolong the harvest.
Storing Best fresh, but can be stored a few days in the fridge.
Harvesting Late June to October. Start picking as soon as fruits are 7cm long. You can pick the flowers before this.
Cooking Notes 'Romanesco' courgette is beautiful cut in cross-sections, and eaten raw in salads or sauteed simply in a little butter or olive oil.

Delicious and easy to grow

My first try at growing vegetables. As a huge courgette eater I bought the Romanesco seeds to try out. Within a few weeks out popped the seedlings and then the fruit started growing. Amazed at how quickly they grew from mere 10cm high into large leaves with lots of fruit and flowers. Delicious to eat. I like to cut them while still small, but my allotment buddy grew them until they were much bigger, however I find if they are left to grow too big they are like marrow and less tasty, so now I've convinced her to cut them whilst still around 12cm. I now know to give them plenty of room to grow, so next time round I shall space them differently. Our first try at growing courgettes was a complete success, in fact today I picked some more. Couldn't be happier with the seeds I bought.

In a cold northern garden this courgette comes up trumps every year. I try several varieties every year and this one always outperforms the others. Masses of delicious courgettes which hold their flavour even as they grow, and lovely flowers
