Broad Bean 'Masterpiece' Green Longpod is a hugely prolific and tasty broad bean which is my favourite for harvesting, blanching and freezing.

Genus Vicia
Group/Species V. faba
Variety Masterpiece Green Longpod
Type Hardy Annual
Common Name Broad Bean, Fava Bean
Soil Type Fertile
Site Full Sun, Shelter
Moisture Well-drained
Height 100-120cm (39-47in)
Spacing Plant seed 5cm deep, 20cm apart in staggered rows 30cm apart. Sow extra seeds at the end of the row for transplants. Plant seedlings 50-75cm apart.
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Direct sow straight into the ground in early spring (March-April) or late autumn (September-October).
Care Tips Pinch out the top 10cm once plants are in full flower and the first 4 pods are forming. This encourages more pods and reduces blackfly problems. May need some support. Add manure to the soil before planting.
Storing These freeze well.
Harvesting June - July, 8-10 weeks from spring sowing. Regular picking (ideally 2 or 3 times a week) will keep production going for about 4-6 weeks.

My first attempt growing broad beans and it won’t be the last. Almost 100 per cent germination sown direct in April north east England. Sweet and delicious. Well worth growing.
