Aubergine 'Money Maker' No. 2 is a good, early variety with tasty fruits and now the only one I grow. It is tolerant of lower temperatures, so can be grown outside, as well as indoors.

A handsome, shiny black aubergine. Plant it with basil, like they do in Greece, to increase the plant's pollination and general health. I love these griddled with fennel seeds and olive oil and made into a spicy aubergine salad to eat with pitta bread and tsatsiki, or enjoy grilled on the barbecue with mozzarella in stacks.

Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow under cover in February-March. Plant out once threat of frost has passed.
Care Tips If planting outside cover with a cloche for 2 weeks to allow plant to settle in. Feed and water regularly. Stake - tie stems to a support as they grow. Pinch out tips at 45cm. Grows well in a container pot.
Harvesting 4-5 months from sowing. June- September. Pick when skins are shiny. You can tell if an aubergine is ripe by looking under the calyx - the greeny-purple star where the fruit joins the stem. If the skin is pure white, the fruit is ripe; if it is tinged green, wait a few days before you use the fruit.
Cooking Notes Griddled or fried in slices, these are quick and delicious.

I've never grown aubergines before but thought I'd give it a try, and have just harvested them. Smaller than supermarket varieties (though this may be slightly down to the size of the pots used and erratic feeding pattern). Only a few fruits per plant but I had several good plants so happy with the result for a first attempt. NB. I grew these in my greenhouse. Plants faded rather towards the end, not sure if I had my heat/light levels right or not. Will definitely grow again.
