More Details

Genus Lactuca sativa
Variety Reine de Glace
Type Hardy Annual
Common Name Lettuce
Soil Type Neutral
Site Full Sun, Part Shade
Moisture Moist but Well-drained
Spacing 20-25cm (8-10in)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Direct sow in small batches every 2-3 weeks from March-August in lines, or blocks. During the summer do not sow in the heat of the day. You can speed the germination process up by sowing into a length of guttering under cover and transplanting outside.
Care Tips Water the drill before sowing to decrease temperatures if you are sowing in warmer months and sow in the evening. Grow under protection in the winter (September - March).
Storing This keeps well in the fridge.
Harvesting 8-10 weeks from sowing. Harvest as hearting lettuce in one go, or just pick a few leaves at a time, producing leaves for about 3 months at a time. Serial sowing should provide leaves May- October.

One of the Best Lettuces Ever!

I love this lettuce. It's crisp frill-edged leaves stand and stand almost without bolting. I sow it all year round! First in early spring in a pot to plant out plants under a cloche, then direct into the soil a few weeks later, again covering the row with a cloche till plants are up and good and strong. Depending on weather, I might leave the cloche on part of the row to stagger growth. I've been cutting the last sowing in August for 2/3 weeks now. Some plants have not been covered and lettuces are small, but very few have bolted. Even these are good to eat or make a lettuce and potato soup.
