More Details

Cucumber 'La Diva' is a brilliant mini cucumber, the size of a large cigar. This is perfect for crudites. My children love this, quartered lengthways for dipping into smoked mackerel pate and humus. It's an easy-to-grow, absolutely delicious and prolific variety.

Genus Cucumis sativus
Variety La Diva
Type Half-Hardy Annual
Common Name Cucumber
Soil Type Neutral
Site Full Sun
Moisture Moist
Height Up to 1.8m (6ft) tall
Spacing As soon as the roots fill their first pot, if the frosts are over, plant them out about 30cm (12in) apart.
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow under cover in Feb-March to be ready to go out when the frosts finish in May. Sow them individually, vertically down (to prevent rotting) into 3in/7.5cm pots. Germinate at unusually high temperatures of at least 21C/70F (at 24C/75F you'll get quicker germination). Seedlings should appear in just over a week. Harden off and plant out in late May. You can speed the germination process up by sowing into a length of guttering under cover and transplanting outside.
Care Tips They are climbers so give some support. Water well, and dig in a good lot of compost when planting out. Regular picking promotes further growth.
Harvesting You'll be eating the fruits by the end of July. If you keep picking, they'll go on producing into the autumn, and finish in October. This cucumber grows to about 20-25cm long.
Cooking Notes Make soup and pickles if you have a glut

I have never grown cucumbers before and have been delighted with my first experience with La Diva. As promised it was prolific and has supplied the family and beyond throughout the summer. I picked the last few last week. The grandchildren have particularly enjoyed them both for snacking and for helping granny to pick them.

This is my first year growing this variety of cucumber and no doubt it will be the first of many... produces lovely, crisp fruit perfect for summer salads and keeps well in the fridge once picked.
