French Bean 'Speedy' is a very early and late cropping green French bean. It's always worth having one delicious, tender green bean which you can sow really early for forcing inside and also sow and harvest late.
This is the best of the ones we've tried – quick to mature in 60 days – and succeeded this year sowing it in August, cropping to the end of October. Sow in succession before and after French Bean 'Masterpiece', for the middle season.
Genus | Phaseolus vulgaris |
Variety | Speedy |
Type | Half-Hardy Annual |
Common Name | French Bean, Dwarf French Bean |
Border Position | Back |
Soil Type | Neutral |
Site | Full Sun |
Moisture | Well-drained |
Height | 45cm (18in) |
Spacing | Plant out seedlings (in late May) when they are 5cm tall, spacing them 25cm apart, against their support cane. |
Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Soak seed for half an hour before sowing. Sow under cover from April or direct sow outside (5cm deep) after the last frosts from mid May to July. |
Care Tips | Water regularly, keep weed free and mulch well. This will need some support. |
Storing | Save the flageolet beans inside to dry and use in stews. These also freeze well. |
Harvesting | June - October. Pick little and often. Dwarf forms crop heavily for 4-6 weeks. Keep picking as often as you can - it is a cut-and-come-again variety. |
Cooking Notes | Do not eat the pods raw, as they contain harmful toxins. To cook, top and tail and place in boiling water, to cook until tender. |

Lovely tasty beans
Reviewed 27th August 2018 by Alan I grew these this year and had a heavy crop from a spring sowing. Had some seeds left over so sowed again in July and they are now in flower (Aug) so looking forward to more beans in September! Highly recommended. |
