If you're going to grow your own tomatoes you want them to be exceptionally good, and they do require a lot of watering. Here are my must haves, sweet, form and fantastically tasty.

This collection contains:

  • Two seedlings of Costoluto Fiorentino – A medium-sized, delicious, juicy Italian variety which grows and crops very reliably here. Best under cover, or against a south facing wall
  • One seedling of Green Zebra – Gold and green skinned tomato which looks beautiful in amongst the other colours and has a good strong flavour
  • Two seedlings of Stupicke Polni Rane – My favourite in my taste trial at the marvellous Worton Organic Farm shop. Delicious, very long and heavy cropping type with good blight resistance.

Genus Lycopersicon lycopersicum
Type Half-Hardy Annual
Common Name Tomato
Soil Type Fertile
Site Full Sun, Shelter
Moisture Well-drained
Spacing Leave 60-90cm (24-36in) between each plant. Plant them deep, sinking them to a depth of 0.5cm below the seed leaves.
Care Tips Under cover or outside they need staking, and regular watering and feeding for best results. Need trimming and support, pinch out the tops once they have set 5 or 6 trusses. While still small, you also need to pinch out the side shoots. Water regularly to prevent splitting. Find more information on how to grow tomatoes from seed.
Storing Tomatoes can be kept at room temperature for 4-5 days (they will lose their flavour if kept in the fridge), and will freeze well.
Harvesting Cordons fruit over a long period. You should be picking tomatoes in July and continue harvesting from the cordons until October.
Cooking Notes Delicious eaten raw, roasted or cooked in Mediterranean dishes.

This threesome gives a flavourful and prolific abundance of tomatoes. I grew them in my tiny greenhouse last summer with excellent (&delicious) results and look forward to enjoying a similar crop this year too!
