I grow this as much for the unusual and beautiful soft pink coral flowers which look fantastic in any vase.

The flowers are edible too – and taste deliciously beany for adding to rice and leaf salads – and then of course there's the tasty, tender beans. This is tipped for the top.

Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow from April under cover. Once the plants are at least 5cm tall, plant them out. You can also sow direct into the garden in May-July (not before as they will be killed by the frost). Get your frame in place before you plant.
Care Tips Support with a cane wigwam, position one plant growing up each cane. Protect from slugs.
Flowering June - September (12-14 weeks from sowing)
Harvesting June-September. Crop in 14-16 weeks. Best picked little and often. Will continue producing until the first frosts.
Cooking Notes Runner beans are best eaten when the pods are young (10-15cm long). Prepare by removing the sides with a sharp knife and cut across in 2cm strips and cooked. Enjoy the edible flowers in salads or as a garnish. The beans can also be dried and used for soups, stews and casseroles.
