One of my favourite things for picking and arranging in my new urn vase, twisting and turning out of the sides, pea pods and all.

Grow it in the ornamental veg garden with the matching, Cardinal purple sweet pea, ‘Blue Velvet’ or ‘Lord Nelson’, and serve on a plate of chic crudités with tapenade or hummus.

Spacing Allow 10cm (4in) between plants in rows 45-60cm (18-24in) apart
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow February-March under cover (in a gutter) or April-June outside. Sow in the gutter or rake out a trench about 5cm (2in) deep and 10cm (4in) wide and sow 2 rows of peas evenly spaced about 7cm (3in) apart. Push soil back over them. Space trenches 75cm (30in) apart. When seedlings reach 5cm (2in) tall erect supports up to 180cm (6ft).
Care Tips Water moderately. Support at planting, against a trellis or fence.
Storing Peas should freeze for up to 6 months, or store in the refrigerator for a fortnight.
Harvesting Harvest from June - October. May be eaten as mangetout when young or harvested for peas as soon as the pods begin to swell. If allowed to grow too large the pods will become starchy.
Cooking Notes Eat raw, or steamed. Add to stir fries, salads, pasta dishes or make into soup.
