More Details

I absolutely love the warm, soft colours in this mix which flowers in a sheltered spot from late winter all the way through spring.

It's one of my favourite spring container plants and I love it to pick for a vase and to decorate puddings.

Genus Viola
Group/Species x wittrockiana
Variety Peach Shades F1
Type Biennial
Common Name Pansy
Border Position Container Garden
Soil Type Broad Tolerance
Site Part Shade
Moisture Moist but well-drained
Height 15cm (6in)
Spacing 30cm (12in)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow undercover, February-March (to flower May onwards), in trays of seed compost, cover seeds lightly. Keep moist and warm. Once seedlings appear and have developed two 'true' leaves, prick out and pot on into individual modules or pot. Grow the seedlings on in a light, frost-free place. Gradually harden off and plant out in late spring. May also be sown April-May for flowering from late summer onwards (except during the hottest summer weather). Autumn sowings can be overwintered in a greenhouse or cold frame for flowering from February the following year.
Care Tips Incorporate a slow-release fertiliser or give a balanced liquid feed every 2-3 weeks. Deadhead or pick regularly to prolong flowering and maintain a compact shape. If plants become leggy, a mid-season chop in July to 5cm (2in) above ground-level will help promote bushy re-growth.
Flowering Spring sowings will flower from May; Autumn sowings will flower from February the following year. Deadhead or pick regularly to prolong flowering and maintain a compact shape. Cut back hard if plants become leggy to promote bushy re-growth.
Vase Life Sear stem ends in boiling water for 5 seconds to maximise vase life.
Harvesting Spring sowings will flower from May; Autumn sowings will flower from February the following year. Deadhead or pick regularly to prolong flowering and maintain a compact shape. Cut back hard if plants become leggy to promote bushy re-growth.
Cooking Notes All violas are edible - use them to decorate salads and puddings.

I was not expecting seeds and they took too long to germinate and we too far behind the other plants in the collection to catch up. Far too fiddly and I would rather have purchased seedlings

Nice strong seedlings - sadly delivered while we were away when despatch advice hadn’t alerted us to the delivery. Replaced by SR and are now lovely plants - although the birds love the flowers and peck them badly!

The violas have flowered continuously since last Autumn as when they get a bit straggly I trim them back and give them a feed and they soon grow back as pretty as ever! Really good value for money.
