Height 30cm (12in)

Sowing, Seeds, Planting Soak seed in warm water for half an hour before sowing. Sow three seeds at 10cm (4in) spacings, 2.5cm (1in) deep in rows 30cm (12in) apart, at fortnightly intervals from mid-April to July for a succession of tender, tasty roots. For earlier sowings protect with cloches and use bolt-resistant varieties. Beetroot sown from June onwards can be used for storing in winter. Before sowing, prepare the soil by digging in plenty of well-rotted garden compost or manure and rake in a handful per square metre of general purpose fertiliser, such as Organic GroChar Fertiliser. Thin seedlings to one per station when 2.5cm (1in) high. If you have purchased seedlings, they can be planted straight into the ground, after preparing the soil as above.
Care Tips Don't water unless soil is very parched, over-watering encourages leaf at the expense of root. Fantastic planted with chamomile, onions and lettuce.
Harvesting June-October - store them overwinter. From spring sown seed, these take about 8-10 weeks from grow. Harvest earlier for small golf ball size beetroot. To harvest, pull alternate plants down the row, in effect thinning, to leave room for remaining beetroot to develop. Remaining roots will enlarge and store for winter.
Cooking Notes Cut the tops off before cooking, as this helps to lock in the nutrients. Cook whole, and then peel the skin to maintain the colour. Tops can be eaten at 5-8cm tall in salads - they are delicious.

Beetroot goos as usual, but due to weather still very small. I water regularly but they will be OK!

Variable. The yellow beets have done really well, the red beets reasonably well and the white beets poorly in terms of germination. All were planted at the same time in the same conditions.! All those that have germinated appear to be doing well.

These germinated well. Very varied seed packet content. Too early to comment on taste etc as too soon to pull.

Good germination and strong growth. Delicious and pretty

I don't remember buying these seeds!

The Boltardy and Chiogga had the best germination, the roots look good together and the yellow and stripey roots are not as sweet which allows a bit more variety when cooking.

This year has been my best ever for lovely beetroot. Took the advice given about growing in an area not planted with brassicas for 4 years and perfect results. Definately on the list for next year.

Bought these seedlings this year as I've been hopeless at growing them from seed! Loved the different colours but the ones that did really well were the Bolthardy and we've had such lovely beetroot this year. The other two didn't do as well as the Bolthardy but will persevere and try again next year!

Delicious!

I bought some golden beetroot and stripey beetroot on holiday in France. Why our supermarkets don't stock these is a mystery?! Found these seedlings here and have been delighted with the results. All grew very well and are delicious! I peel, slice and eat raw in salads. Or roast or even juice! Only problem is my garden isn't bigger so I can grow more. Would definitely recommend!
