More Details

The warmer summers of the last few years mean that we’ve had great success growing aubergines outside, and none better than these two; classic varieties for our less than Mediterranean climates, ’Moneymaker’ and the stir-fry perfect ‘Slim Jim’.

This collection contains 2 seedlings each of:
Common Name Aubergine
Border Position Kitchen Garden
Soil Type Broad Tolerance
Site Full Sun
Moisture Moist but Well-drained
Height 60cm (24in)
Spacing 30-60cm (12-24in)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Pot seedlings on into 9cm (3-4in) pots and grow indoors, before transferring into 23cm (9in) pots of compost and moving to a heated greenhouse in April (or early May if unheated). For growing outdoors, wait until the end of May or early June before moving them outside to a sheltered, sunny spot and cover with a cloche for a couple of weeks to allow the plant to adjust to outside conditions.
Care Tips Better suited to greenhouse production but if planting outside, cover with a cloche for 2 weeks to allow plants to settle in. Pinch out tips at 45cm (18in) and stake as you would tomatoes. Mist flowers with tepid water to help fruit set and provide plenty of water, especially in dry weather. Feed with high potash until the fruits have set.
Flowering Harvest from June - September
Storing Aubergines should keep for two weeks in the fridge.
Harvesting June- September. Pick when skins are shiny. You can tell if an aubergine is ripe by looking under the calyx - the greeny-purple star where the fruit joins the stem. If the skin is pure white, the fruit is ripe; if it is tinged green, wait a few days before you use the fruit.
Cooking Notes Griddled or fried in slices, these are quick and delicious.
