Most commercial raspberries are now grown under plastic – the weather risks are less – and picked partially ripe so they travel better and have a longer shelf life. Enjoy growing your own outdoors for a deeper colour, flavour and greater nutrition.
You'll see immediately that the fruit is not pink but a deep purple-red and the texture when you eat it is soft and the flavour fantastic. Grow these two varieties together so you can eat fruit from late June to September.
This collection contains 5 bare roots each of:
Common Name | Raspberry |
Border Position | Kitchen Garden |
Soil Type | Broad Tolerance |
Site | Full Sun |
Moisture | Moist but Well-drained |
Height | 1.5m (5ft) |
Spacing | Plant in rows 38cm (15in) apart, leaving 1.8m (6ft) between each. Find more information on how to plant and grow raspberry canes in our How-To section. |
Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Raspberries thrive in moisture-retentive, fertile, slightly acidic soils, which are well-drained and weed free. They dislike soggy soils and shallow chalky soils. For best results, plant in a sunny position (although they will tolerate part shade). Ideally, site your rows running north to south, so that they do not shade each other. |
Care Tips | Train up posts and wires, loosely tie in the stems as they grow. Net to protect from birds. In autumn, prune the canes that have fruited to ground level, tie in the other canes (6-8 canes should be left). Add manure in the spring. |
Storing | Raspberries are best eaten immediately. To store in the fridge, place in a single layer on a tray and cover. Or freeze. |
Harvesting | June - July (Glen Ample), August - first frosts (Autumn Bliss) |
Cooking Notes | These are delicious eaten fresh with a little whipped cream with added chopped stem ginger, or try them in Sarah's Raspberry cupcakes with mascarpone frosting. |
