This purple mizuna does better in the late spring and summer, when it's slower to bolt than the green, and is lovely in the winter, when the purple leaves are at their richest.

Sowing, Seeds, Planting Direct sow in small batches every 6-8 weeks March to September, although it's best to avoid the hottest months when flea beetle is most prevalent. These will be happiest in a cool, northern bed, kept moist. Hot weather inhibits germination and increases the likelihood of bolting. Water the drill before sowing to decrease temperatures and sow in the evening. You can speed the germination process up by sowing into a length of guttering under cover and transplanting outside.
Care Tips Thin or space plants 10-15cm (4-6in) for cut-and-come-again, 20cm (8in) if you want large leaves. Keep moist. It may get infested with flea beetle, April-August leaving lots of tiny holes all over the leaves. Protect with a physical barrier of fleece from sowing.
Harvesting 4-6 weeks from sowing, or into winter with protection. Harvest for babyleaf when 5cm tall or larger for salads/stir-fries. Pick outer leaves only so plant can continue to grow. Harvest regularly to prevent running to seed. Can be grown inside in a greenhouse or polytunnel for picking all winter.
