More Details

Eryngium alpinum is a glamorous, blue-tinged, large-flowered sea-holly, loved by pollinators.

Eryngiums rank with euphorbias, poppies, sunflowers and Parrot tulips as my favourite plants for cutting and for the garden. The sculpted heads in steely grey or rich royal blue are hard to beat. Grow them and grow lots of them.

Sowing, Seeds, Planting Direct sow March and/or August. May need a warm-cold-warm cycle and may be slow to germinate, taking up to 80 days.
Care Tips Sow in the autumn for best results, in shallow pans in light soil under a cold frame. Seeds can take a long time to germinate. Plant out the seedlings, and protect from cold, wet winter days. Leave the attractive seedheads on over winter. This grows well in container pots.
Flowering July - October, the following year
Vase Life Give eryngiums a long drink in deep water. They should last for 2 weeks. Or dry in time for your Christmas table.
Harvesting Flower production: 12 weeks.
