I love red valerian for softening the edges of lawns, patios, paths and walls, where it can cascade and froth to create a colour-saturated carpet.

It is great cut by the jugful too, for an abundant 'wild flower' arrangement.

Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow indoors March-May. Sow seed thinly onto the surface of a good quality seed compost, lightly cover and keep soil moist. Germination should occur within 21-30 days. Pot seedlings on and move to a cooler location to grow on before planting out.
Care Tips Will self-seed freely, cut back in July after the first flush of flowers and in autumn to limit its spread.

Most of the seeds I planted germinated and I planted them out in June, but they are presumably still setting up their root systems and are not going to flower in their first year. They look healthy so I'm hoping they'll be off to a flying start for next year.
