Sow undercover April – May in modules or gutters to avoid root disturbance. Once roots have filled their individual modules, harden off and plant out when all danger of frost has passed. Sow direct late-May-June, zinnias and basil hate cold nights.

This is the perfect pairing, which look good and grow together perfectly, thriving in identical conditions. They remind me of my favourite childhood game, Fuzzy Felt , where surprise, surprise, I always created not the cars but the flowers!

Both zinnias and basil hate cold nights, so need to be sown and planted out late. A brilliant gardener once taught me — ‘if you’re happy to have supper in your garden, basil and zinnias are happy to be out there too’. From their late beginnings, these two thrive, well into autumn.

Care Tips

Water at least once a week in the morning, not evening and stake plants individually. Picking or deadheading is necessary to prolong blooming and encourage branching. Basil needs regular watering, pinch out growing tips.
