Preferably plant in moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil in partial shade. Drier conditions tolerated when dormant in summer. Plant 10cm (4in) deep.

I’ve long had huge affection for this buttercup-like spring anemone. I remember finding this carpeting woods in the foothills of Monte Grappa in the Veneto with my Dad when I was a girl. It’s quick and easy to naturalise.
