Pinch out tips when plants have 4 pairs of leaves. If autumn sown, overwinter in a light, cool place. Sweet peas often have quite a hard seed coat so it may help to soften the seed before sowing. To do this, place the seeds on some damp kitchen paper and pop them in a warm spot. Once the seeds start to swell or sprout they are ready to sow. If the seeds don’t seem to be swelling you can try making a small nick in the seed coat (opposite the ‘eye’) as this will help moisture enter the seed and kick-start the germination process.
Care Tips Remove the climbing tendrils as they grow. Tie the stem into your framework on a regular basis. Can be grown in deep container pots up a climbing frame. Find out how to cordon train your sweet pea in Sarah's how-to guide.

I grew these from seed, following the instructions to the letter, however, it's not the first time I've grown sweet peas from seed.
I was looking forward to a wigwam of strong colours, heavy perfume and lovely long stems to cut and dot around the house.
Sadly not to be.
They were with out exception all shades of white, cream and the palest lavender with the shortest stems I've ever seen on a sweet pea!
No bud or posy vases for these, they just about managed in egg cups!
They did however, smell wonderful.

I could not let the sweet pea season come to an end without letting you know how superb your 24 seedling collection has been.
As I write we are coming to the end at 8ft high for the 3rd time on my sweet pea frame. Whilst the petals are now few, the scent is still as strong as ever.
On opening the packaging I was delighted to find a considerable root content which I transferred to tubes until I was ready to plant them out here in the North of England.
I have passed your name to several people who have admired them.
With grateful thanks

Just beautiful

This was the first year I have owned my own garden so sweet peas were a must! They started flowering at the end of May and are still going now! I've had to give bunches away to family, friends, colleagues and neighbours to keep up with them, and still have lots in the garden for the pollinators.

Everyone has loved them, i'm getting them again next year!

Well worth the money

These exploded into action mid June and are still going six weeks later. They fill the garden with the most stunning fragrance, the flower colours are bright with wonderful variety of shades, absolute must for every Summer!

My small garden is north facing and overlooked so it's hard for me to get a long growing season. As a result I try to get a head start with bought seedlings. These sweet pea seedlings were very robust and healthy on arrival and have gone on to be six feet tall and produce a spectacular scented show in stunning colours. They really repay feeding and tendril chopping - we've had vases and vases of flowers from 24 seedlings. Highly recommended.

Beautiful, healthy, strong plants, perfectly packaged.

I ordered these late in the season at a sale price but would happily buy next year at full price. The 'seedlings' are more like young plants, and look full of vigour and health. They arrived fresh, beautifully packaged, in white paper wrappers round the root balls, and were clearly labelled with each variety. I'd be happy to send the collection as a gift, they were so well presented. Whether the poor dears will survive my less than expert handling I don't know, but it's clear that all at Sarah Raven really care about the health and quality of their plants, and have given them the best possible start in life. Now it's up to me. I'm not sure I can handle the responsibility!
