I am hugely excited about this - Samphire you can grow in a pot. Just germinate and water with a little salt. Will self-sow.
Please note, illustrated packets are being introduced gradually over the coming months, availability may vary.
Genus | Salicornia |
Group/Species | europaea |
Type | Perennial |
Common Name | Samphire, Marsh Samphire, Common Glasswort |
Border Position | Front |
Soil Type | Sandy |
Scent | Unscented |
Site | Full Sun |
Moisture | Dry, Well-drained |
Height | 10cm (4in) |
Spacing | 20cm (8in) |
Sowing, Seeds, Planting | Surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Just cover seed with a sprinkling of soil. After sowing water from the base only. You can speed the germination process up by sowing into a length of guttering under cover and transplanting outside. |
Care Tips | Prefers a moist, light, sandy soil in full sun. Requires saline conditions to do well so these are best grown in coastal locations. Will tolerate a very well-drained poor soil. If the soil is too rich the plant will become floppy. |
Flowering | June - August |
Storing | If you have to store it keep it in an airtight box and keep it in the salad drawer in the fridge for no longer than a 3 days. |
Harvesting | Harvest only young growth once the plants have become well developed. |

Harvest samphire from mud flats or salt marshes in July - or ask your fishmonger. This makes an excellent first course.

Samphire (Salicornia europaea) reviews
Reviewed 31st July 2019 by Judy None of these seeds germinated. I thought it was the earlier cold weather, so tried again later, but still none germinated. |
Didn't germinate
Reviewed 22nd August 2017 by Annie Hazell I tried sowing these first as instructed and then again in slightly saline compost and on both occasions nothing germinated. Disappointing as I was looking forward to trying this and was prepared for the little extra effort of growing/watering in salt water. Reply from the Sarah Raven Team:"Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear that you have not had any success with your samphire seeds. We would recommend that you surface sow the seed onto moist, well-drained seed compost, covering lightly with just a sprinkling of soil. After sowing water from the base only and keep moist, but not wet at all times. Germination should take 10-14 days. If you would like to try a replacement packet next spring, then we will of course send you one so that you can try again. We have made a note on your account and if you contact our customer service team at info@sarahraven.com or by calling 0345 092 0283 we will arrange for your seeds to be sent out to you . No success
Reviewed 4th July 2017 by Fiona Sadly didn't germinate. Was excited about trying this as I live next to the coast. Am wondering if it would work if germinated in peat pods soaked in seawater - may try again Reply from the Sarah Raven Team:"Thank you for your feedback. Posted 6th July 2017 |
