With the bloom of a Victoria plum, the pleats of Shakespearean breeches and the flavour of sweet potato, treacly when roasted, this trailing pumpkin looks and tastes SUPERB.

It's a brilliant winter storer too and should store right through the winter months.

Genus Cucurbita
Group/Species moschata
Variety Black Futsu
Type Half-Hardy Annual
Common Name Pumpkin
Border Position Middle
Soil Type Fertile, Neutral
Scent Unscented
Site Full Sun
Moisture Moist but Well-drained
Height 50cm (20in)
Spacing 1.2m (4ft)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow April-June. Can be started under cover (in individual cells to minimise root disturbance) or sown direct.
Care Tips Water well, and avoid the plant becoming dry. Mulch well, and dig in plenty of manure. Will need a frame to climb up. It is important to pinch out the triffid-like growth tips once they reach 1-1.5m and to keep doing so! This helps the fruit to set.
Flowering August - October
Storing Squash with bruises or marks on their skin won't store well so use these up soon after harvesting. To improve their storage-life fruits can be cured by exposing them to the sun for a couple of weeks to harden the skin before storing in a cool, dry, well-ventialted area between 10-20°C.
Harvesting Harvest fruit once the leaves have started to turn yellow but before the first frosts (frost will damage the fruits). Cut the stem near the vine or at least 5-10cm from the fruit. A good indication of ripeness is a hollow sound when the fruit is tapped, you should also be able to dig your nail into the rind without puncturing it.
