Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow from April, under cover, one seed to its own pot or module. Once the plants are at least 5cm tall, plant them out. You can also sow direct into the garden May-July (not before as they will be killed by frost). Beans prefer to grow in moist, fertile soil, in a sunny, sheltered spot. Prepare the soil for planting by digging over and adding plenty of organic material. This will help to improve the soil's moisture retaining ability and fertility. Dwarf varieties are ideal for growing in containers, use a pot with a minimum diameter of 45cm (18in).
Care Tips Water regularly, especially during dry weather or if growing in a container. Protect from slugs.
Flowering June - September
Vase Life Sear stem ends in boiling water for 10 seconds.
Harvesting Pick the beans young and tender so they’re at their best. Harvest the flowers too – they tasty deliciously beany.
Cooking Notes Runner beans are best eaten when the pods are young (10-15cm long). Prepare by removing the sides with a sharp knife and cut across in 2cm strips and cooked. Enjoy the edible flowers in salads or as a garnish. The beans can also be dried and used for soups, stews and casseroles.
