More Details

This is the perfect pairing, which look good and grow together perfectly, thriving in identical conditions. They remind me of my favourite childhood game, Fuzzy Felt , where surprise, surprise, I always created not the cars but the flowers!

Both zinnias and basil hate cold nights, so need to be sown and planted out late. A brilliant gardener once taught me — ‘if you’re happy to have supper in your garden, basil and zinnias are happy to be out there too’. From their late beginnings, these two thrive, well into autumn.

This collection contains 1 seed packet each of:
Border Position Container Garden, Cutting Garden
Soil Type Broad Tolerance
Scent Yes
Site Full Sun
Moisture Moist but Well-drained
Height 90cm (36in)
Spacing 30cm (12in)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow undercover April – May. Zinnias and basil are best sown in modules or gutters to avoid root disturbance. Place somewhere warm and keep moist until germination occurs, usually within a week. Once roots have filled their individual modules, plant out. Harden off before planting out at the recommended spacing when all danger of frost has passed. Sow direct late-May-June, later than most annuals as both zinnias and basil hate cold nights.
Care Tips Water at least once a week in the morning, not evening and stake plants individually - if they collapse over, they’ll never grow or flower as well as when vertically supported. Zinnias have a tendency to botrytis, especially during damp and cool weather so it is important to ensure good air circulation around plants and tidy up any dead or dying leaves and plant material. Picking or deadheading is necessary to prolong blooming and encourage branching. Basil needs regular watering, pinch out growing tips so plants bulk out, grows well in a container.
Flowering July - October
Vase Life Strip the bottom leaves and sear stem ends in boiling water for 10 seconds and then leave in cool water, ideally overnight before arranging.
