Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow undercover March-April. Sow as thinly as you can into seed trays, individual small pots or modules. Place somewhere warm and keep moist until germination occurs, usually within a couple of weeks. Prick out and pot on when seedlings are 2-3cm (1 inch) tall and have developed a pair of 'true' leaves. If sown into modules/pots wait until roots have filled their individual modules before potting on. Once germinated, good light levels, cool air temperatures (just above freezing) and warm roots are ideal for growing on. All-round light is also important in forming strong, bulky plants. Harden off before planting out at the recommended spacing when all danger of frost has passed. Any seedlings that are looking spindly or 'leggy' can be pinched out before planting in their final position to help promote strong, bushy growth. Gradually acclimatise plants to outdoor conditions for 7-10 days before moving to their final position after the last frosts.
Care Tips Water in well, with a drown not a sprinkle, for two weeks or so while the roots get established after which you should be able to stop watering unless there’s a prolonged period of dry weather. Stake plants individually or grow through netting or mesh. Ensure supports are in place while plants are still young. Pick regularly for the vase.
Flowering July - October
Vase Life Strip the bottom leaves and sear stem ends in boiling water for 10 seconds and then leave in cool water, ideally overnight before arranging.
Harvesting July - October. Stake plants individually or grow through netting or mesh. Pick regularly for the vase.
