Pure scented white sweet rocket flowers that were a favourite of Marie Antionette.

Hesperis matronalis or Dame's Violet grow amazingly happily in sun or shade. I saw an incredible sight of both the purple and white form lining both banks of a river near Thirsk in Yorkshire, where Dame's violet still grows wild. Like foxgloves, it's in drifts that it works best.

Two years to establish nicely

I grew these from seed two years ago placing them straight into the ground with a mix of other wild-looking plants. They didn't appear until last year when they covered a whole bank, the strongest growing of all. In the late summer, they were smothered in writhing caterpillars, and I left them to be devoured. They looked a mess and I pulled up the majority. This year five have regrown, looking great and behaving reliably. I have deadheaded to prolong flowering and they are still going now in Mid-July, a nice backdrop for other plants, especially a white ground covering rose. But if you cut them and bring them inside, the smell is not pleasant. I would not call them fragrant!

Meh it's OK

I ordered 3 9cm plants, grew 'em on a bit and bunged them in the garden. They have all survived and produced flowers. Truth be told I am slightly underwhelmed by these weedy sort of looking plants. But - the live! They flower! :-D They can stay!
