More Details

A lovely soft pink foxglove which flowers at the same time and looks beautiful with peonies in June. This is one of my absolute favourite plants. Bees and butterflies love them too.

Foxgloves make some of the very best cottage garden early summer garden plants and cut flowers. If you pick the king flower (the main spire) you create lots of prince flowers and the plants will then go on flowering for longer.

Please note: This is harmful if eaten.

Genus Digitalis
Group/Species purpurea
Variety Sutton's Apricot
Type Hardy Biennial
Common Name Foxglove
Border Position Back
Soil Type Chalky, Neutral
Scent Unscented
Site Full Sun, Part Shade
Moisture Moist but Well-drained
Height 1.2m (4ft)
Spacing 60cm (24in)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow under cover May - July on compost surface, do not cover. Transplant to 7.5cm pots, grow on and harden off before late summer, early autumn planting in final flowering position or can sow direct. Foxgloves will grow in most soils (except very wet or very dry) but prefer fertile soil in a semi-shaded spot. To help plants establish sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi (Rootgrow) into the base of the planting hole. Allow good spacing between plants to aid air circulation and help prevent mildew. See our advice pages for a guide to sowing and growing foxgloves.
Care Tips They self seed freely but some will revert to the wild colour form. Pull out any seedlings with red stems if you want them to remain pure. May need staking. Remove the first flower spike early to encourage more 'prince' flowers from the base. Caution: All parts of the plant are highly toxic if ingested.
Flowering May - July, 1 year from sowing seed
Vase Life 7-10 days. As you cut put them in a deep bucket of warm water and leave for several hours before arranging. Remove any flowers hanging by the stigma.
Harvesting Flower production: 2-3 months.

Probably not their fault; they have been slightly swamped by rampant japanese anemones, but will flower eventually I'm sure.

Disappointed in the germination rate. I only managed to get 5 seedlings.

I am always excited to receive my orders from Sarah Raven and they come in excellent packing and well protected. Sadly non of the Solomen Seal roots came to anything which was very disappointing but everything else is doing well.
