The late and great Christopher Lloyd put me off growing Echiums but my local hort.soc. handed out packets of Sarah Raven's seeds to members this spring. Luckily I got Blue bedder and what a delight that has been. Outstandingly vivid blue flowers alive with honey bees. I will dead head to ensue flowering until September. Thanks Sarah!

Echium - how to deadhead

These plants are lovely. However, you advise deadheading to keep blooms coming. Do I deadhead the whole flower stem or each individual little flower on the stem? I see some at the bottom have passed over while there are still buds at the top. Please help.

Reply from the Sarah Raven Team:

"Thank you for your feedback, we would recommend deadheading each individual flower head. If you would like further advice please contact our customer service team on 0345 092 0283 or by email at

Growing these for the second year. Seeds, sowed mid March, have germinated, under glass, inside a week!
Dense flowers, highly popular with bees, great colour and I found no allergic reaction.
Looking forward to flowering time.
