More Details

Sweet Pea 'Prince Edward of York' is my absolute favourite sweet pea with deep pink wings and pale pink nose – amazing scent, long-flowering and truly beautiful. 9/10 scent.

The result of Henry Eckford's work in the late 19th century is the Grandiflora group of sweet peas which, until this year, formed 90 per cent of the varieties I grow. They have what are now considered to be relatively small flowers and short stems with three, sometimes four flowers to a stem, but many of them are irresistible, with wonderful, strong scent and great dignity and elegance.

No garden is complete without sweet peas. Grow them over arches, teepees and trellis and plant them with your runner beans to draw lots of insect pollinators into your veg patch.

We sow our highly-scented, old-fashioned sweet pea seeds in the winter, as well as in the spring, so that you will have excellent productive plants throughout the summer. Our sweet pea seedlings come with full planting instructions.

Genus Lathyrus odoratus
Group/Species Eckford grandiflora
Variety Prince Edward of York
Type Hardy Annual Climber
Common Name Sweet Pea
Border Position Climber
Soil Type Fertile, Neutral
Scent Scented
Site Full Sun
Moisture Moist but Well-drained
Height 2m (6ft 7in)
Spacing Plant out, 2 plants to a vertical support, 15cm (6in) apart in a mild spell in March-May.
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow October-December or January-March, 2 seeds into 1 rootrainer. When roots fill container, pot on 2 seedlings together into a 1 litre pot. Pinch out tips when plants have 4 pairs of leaves. If autumn sown, overwinter in a light, cool place. Sweet peas often have quite a hard seed coat so it may help to soften the seed before sowing. To do this, place the seeds on some damp kitchen paper and pop them in a warm spot. Once the seeds start to swell or sprout they are ready to sow. If the seeds don’t seem to be swelling you can try making a small nick in the seed coat (opposite the ‘eye’) as this will help moisture enter the seed and kick-start the germination process.
Care Tips Remove the climbing tendrils as they grow. Tie the stem into your framework on a regular basis. Can be grown in deep container pots up a climbing frame. Find out how to cordon train your sweet pea in Sarah's how-to guide.

Vase Life 4-5 days. Avoid direct sunlight and heat. This has a beautiful scent.

As always, good, strong plants but the poor weather meant they got off to a slow start. I shall buy mixed colours next year.

I’m quite disappointed for the price I’ve paid as I followed all instructions and tips given by both Sarah Raven and Arthur Parkinson starting the seeds off in the winter, but have had only about 8 flowers so far at this stage at the beginning of August! I have lovingly tended the plants for a very poor show really. Not sure I’d pay these prices plus expensive postage again.

I had about 50% success rate with these seeds which was slightly disappointing. The seeds that did germinate have produced healthy beautiful plants though.

I had these last year and rated 5. This year 4 largely I think because the weather here has not been as good for sweat peas. Nonetheless they have bloomed and have a lovely perfume.

I remember this as performing better in previous years - poor germination (4/20 then 9/20), small flowers and only medium length stems. Disappointing.

Failed to germinate (including repeat sowing) and I was very unimpressed with customer service's response - refund for the packet of seeds but no offer of Prince Edward seedlings, so I missed out on pink s/p this year. Especially unimpressed as I am a regular customer and have NEVER had problems germinating sweet peas before! And none of my others failed - I conclude it was a dud batch. Unimpressed.

I really like this colourful sweet pea but I don't believe I received all 4 seedlings. When my sweet peas came into flower I had at least 2 rogue plants and Prince Edward of York was the one I was short of. One of the unordered ones was a dark maroon colour (Windsor maybe?) and the other was a purply pink (Gwendoline possibly).
My disappointment at the reduced number of Prince of York seedlings is the reason for my 3 star rating.

I don't know who packs the plants that you sell but I have also received a rogue dahlia this year - a purple one rather than 'Mel's Orange Marmalade'. I would welcome some compensation for that mistake, it looks totally out of place in our garden.

Reply from the Sarah Raven Team:

"Thank you for your review. we are sorry to hear that some of your Prince Edward sweet peas flowered incorrectly and have refunded you for these. We have also arranged for you to receive a replacement dahlia 'Mel's Orange' when available next spring."

The plants were very healthy, flowered profusely and had beautiful scent.

These plants were a replacement for my failed seeds of this variety. my other varieties of sweet peas germinated well in the same root-trainers so I'm not sure why this variety failed.

Reasonable when original seeds failed to sprout providing replacement plants to be the same size as the other seeds sown.

I just had to write a review of these beautiful bright sweet peas as its the 3rd November and I just picked another large bunch! Ok, I only ordered them in early May and with the cold weather up here in Cheshire they were slow to get going in summer but they have made up for it this autumn. They are very vigorous, towering well over my 180cm teepee and smell gorgeous. I will definitely buy these again.
