More Details

A beautiful collection of Amethyst coloured sweet peas, especially selected by Sarah for their scent and productivity, available as seeds or seedlings.

The seed packet contains a mix of all three old-fashioned, highly scented varieties whilst the seedling collection includes 4 or 8 seedlings each of:

These three have been trialled repeatedly by us and are outstanding in terms of ease of growth, productivity and perfume. They make excellent garden border plants, as well as cut flowers. Not to be missed.

We sow our highly-scented, old-fashioned sweet pea seeds in rootrainers in the winter, as well as in the spring, so that you will have excellent, productive plants that flower throughout the summer.

We also only send out our seedlings at the correct time for planting so you can just pop them in your patch without any need to grow them on. The seedlings include full growing instructions.

Genus Lathyrus
Group/Species odoratus
Type Hardy Annual Climber
Common Name Sweet Pea
Border Position Climber
Soil Type Fertile, Neutral
Scent Scented
Site Full Sun
Moisture Well-drained
Height 2m (6ft 7in)
Spacing Plant out, 2 plants to a vertical support, 15cm (6in) apart in a mild spell in March-May.
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow October-December or January-March, 2 seeds into 1 rootrainer. When roots fill container, pot on 2 seedlings together into a 1 litre pot. Pinch out tips when plants have 4 pairs of leaves. If autumn sown, overwinter in a light, cool place. Sweet peas often have quite a hard seed coat so it may help to soften the seed before sowing. To do this, place the seeds on some damp kitchen paper and pop them in a warm spot. Once the seeds start to swell or sprout they are ready to sow. If the seeds don’t seem to be swelling you can try making a small nick in the seed coat (opposite the ‘eye’) as this will help moisture enter the seed and kick-start the germination process.
Care Tips Remove the climbing tendrils as they grow. Tie the stem into your framework on a regular basis. Can be grown in deep container pots up a climbing frame. Find out how to cordon train your sweet pea in Sarah's how-to guide.
Flowering May - August (winter-sown) or June - September (spring-sown), or 12-14 weeks from spring-sowing of seed.
Vase Life 4-5 days. Avoid direct sunlight and heat. This has a beautiful scent.
Harvesting Keep picking as often as you can.

The perfume from these sweetpeas is to die for. They are prolific bloomers (as long as you deadhead regularly). Would order again.

This is a good collection, but a little dull on it's own. It would be even better if you add a pop of colour. I grew this collection with Prince Edward of York and the 4 colours make a fantastic combination. Suggest you sell this set of 4 as a collection next year (under a new name)!

Exceeded my expectations. All seedlings took and overwhelmed my bamboo sticks in no time. Fabulous colours. Have now got powdery mildew but maybe because I grew too many plants on one tepee.

'Flora Norton' failed to appear and stems on most were too short to even cut - very disappointed in the result overall. Planted in a large container and nurtured to the very last!!

Dear Sarah and team, after a fabulous couple of days with you at North Yorkshire I was truly inspired- the pots I planted up using your colour guide have been invaluable- moving around the garden, filling in spaces and completing a particular colour scheme. Every product I bought is fab- and I've huge glads waiting to happen. I have successfully propogated dahlia, delphinium and geranium cuttings as you showed us .
We have Chafer (?) bug in our village- lawns disappearing by the day, so I have left my front lawn uncut and thrown wild flower seeds in whenever possible. We will cut it soon but it has great promise for next year. Any product you could recommend would we welcome. Finally, keep up the good work,I hope to meet up with you again, the top quality of your plants is splendid. Very best wishes to you all, Denise Hawthorne

Purchased this for a gift, the tin was very nice worth keeping for further use.
My daughter did not get a good show of sweet peas however this may have been due to the unusual spring weather we had. My sweet peas were not very good this year

Such beautiful flowers and a wonderful combination of colours with a glorious scent. They battled on stalwartly despite the searing heat this summer and were really excellent value. On my list for next year.

Undertook to supply sweet peas for friends' wedding in June (no pressure!). It was touch and go whether I would make the deadline. I have to say the plants arrived in lovely condition, beautifully packaged and were much admired by all. Did not quite make the wedding deadline but as their honeymoon to the West Country was two weeks later they took with them an enormous bunch of your gorgeous sweet peas which scented the car all the way down and also the cottage and they sent me a picture with them on the table with champagne and a cream tea alongside. Thank you so much and I will most definitely be repeating this order next year.

Both the service and the quality of the plants rated 5 stars. This year the flowers have been prolific. I grow them in containers and these seedlings gave 4 planters a wonderful display and have provided a bunch a day of fabulous scented cut flowers....admired by all who had them given to a a gift as well as those I kept for my own family to enjoy.

Very low germination rate

Reviewed 11th July 2018 by Yoshiko Harrop

I grow sweet peas from seeds every year and these are new to me.
I was surprised how low the germination rate was.
Less than 40% came out from one packet so I bought another packet. Same result.
But the ones did come out grew well.
They branched out very well even without pinching, grew on very strongly.
When they have started flowering I noticed only three ‘Lord Nelson’ were there, and one of them died while flowering. Definitely a weak colour.
Although the flowers are not big nor frilly and max of three per stem as they are old fashioned ones, they are plenty and just go on flowering and flowering with the intoxicating scent!
I like the strong growth and scent, but I would like to have more colour rather than mostly two tone effect of cream and light blue and prefer higher germination rate varieties.
I did mention to customer service regarding low germination rate and they have kindly refunded the money.

A little disappointed, bought this along with onyx, seeds germinated quickly and plants are lovely and strong, growing really well however so far I have only one colour flowering and no scent at all. These were planted to provide flowers for an August wedding, have since been to local garden centre and bought more to provide extra colour! Not sure what happened but won't be ordering sweetpeas again, shame
