More Details

Eryngium bourgatii is one of the blue-est of the beautiful sea hollies, with delicate whorls of spikes around the central central egg. Bees and butterflies love these.

Eryngiums rank with euphorbias, poppies, sunflowers and Parrot tulips as my favourite plants for cutting and for the garden. The sculpted heads in steely grey or rich royal blue are hard to beat. Grow them and grow lots of them.

Sowing, Seeds, Planting Direct sow March-April and/or August-September (may be slow to germinate).
Care Tips Sow in the autumn for best results, in shallow pans in light soil under a cold frame. Seeds can take a long time to germinate. Plant out the seedlings, and protect from cold, wet winter days. Leave the attractive seedheads on over winter. This grows well in container pots.
Flowering July - August
Vase Life Give eryngiums a long drink in deep water. They should last for 2 weeks. Or dry in time for your Christmas table.
