More Details

Delphinium 'Black Knight' is my favourite deep indigo blue delphinium, which flowers in May/June at Perch Hill and again in August/September.

No summer border or perennial cut flower patch is complete without its fair share of delphiniums – the most statuesque towering spires for any garden.

Delphiniums are one of the most spectacular cut flowers you can grow. Grown from seed, this is a cheap way of introducing delphiniums into your garden and vase.

Genus Delphinium
Variety Black Knight
Type Hardy Perennial
Border Position Back
Soil Type Chalky, Neutral
Scent Unscented
Site Full Sun, Part Shade
Moisture Well-drained, Moist but Well-drained
Height 1.5m (59in)
Spacing 75cm (30in)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow under cover March-April and/or August. Pot on until roots fill a 9cm pot.
Care Tips Correct spacing is important to avoid mildew. Stake to prevent them flopping. Cut the flower spikes and leaves right to the ground in July and they will leaf up and flower again in August and September.
Flowering June-July and/or August-September, will flower the following year after sowing seed
Vase Life These should last 7 days in the vase. For tall spikes a cane can be inserted into hollow stem to prevent bending and breaking. Pick when most flowers are open. Do not put near fruit bowls as they are senstive to ethylene gas which is omitted when fruit ripens.
