I fell on this soft and smokey colour combination of delphiniums last June, picked from my friend Juliet Glaves' flower field.

This collection contains 1 plant each of:
Common Name Larkspur
Border Position Border (Back)
Soil Type Broad Tolerance
Scent Unscented
Site Full Sun
Moisture Well-drained
Height 90cm (36in)
Spacing 60cm (24in)
Sowing, Seeds, Planting Sow indoors late winter at 13°C (55°F) in a moist seed compost, covering with a thin layer too. Keep in the dark. Germination can take up to a month but check regularly. Transfer resulting seedlings into 9cm pots and acclimatise to outside conditions before planting out. Delphiniums love well-drained soil, but are hungry feeders. This means adding plenty of grit on heavy soils to help with drainage, if they sit wet in their dormant winter season, they can die, so make sure you prevent this. To aid quick establishment, sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi (Rootgrow) into the base of the planting hole. Correct spacing is also important to help avoid mildew.
Care Tips Feed regularly throughout their growing season. You want to use something slow release such as organic chicken manure pellets. Do this a couple of times in summer and try to repeat once in autumn before the plants die down. The other vital thing with delphiniums is the staking as any strong wind or heavy rain will flatten them and break their hollow stems. Cut flower spikes and leaves right to the ground in July and they will leaf up and flower again in August and September. Unfortunately slugs love delphinium shoots, so a dose of Nemaslug will help protect your plants.

Despite following planting instructions these were very disappointing. Only one flower.

Service is always excellent but the summer flowering delphinium collection was disappointing. Flower stems very short and only one on each plant. I planted them in middle of border but they didn’t grow tall enough to be seen.

I love buying plants from Sarah Raven as they are such good quality and arrive so well packaged. However this year I was a little disappointed. I ordered the blue and pink sweet pea collections, the pink arrived two weeks after the blue and one plant had yellow leaves on arrival and, despite speedy watering and planting it didn't survive. The blue collection was half white (6 out of 12 plants), two a gorgeous white with mauve tints and only four blue. In the pink collection Painted Lady was very pretty but the stems were so short they've not been good for picking. Sarah does mention this in the details so I should have read them more carefully! The scent has been divine
The delphiniums have done well despite slugs and look wonderful.

I put these delphiniums into pots. One fell off its roots and I called and it was replaced free of charge. However, I didn't think the quality of these plants was great. Just average. Maybe they are meant to be planted in a border?

The two pink delphiniums which I wanted most both died. One was battered when it arrived which I didn’t report to you as I should have , then I lost both of them. The white one is ok.

The service was excellent as usual and the plants arrived safe and well.

The three plants were different varieties, and two were well grown and the third much smaller. I was originally concerned about the small one.

I prepared the site for the group, and planted each and watered all together. The weather soon after was not kind. Cold, very wet and very windy. The two taller plants keeled over, though staked, and were dead in 36 hours.

The smallest is thriving and still not large but is happy and doing well.

I was very disappointed with my delphiniums . I bought at least 9 plants and they were all tiny week specimens at least 3 were either broken or rotted at the base . I complained and received replacements for 3 which were not much better - I will not be buying them again

I couldn't resist these delphiniums in the sale - I've bought delphiniums and other plants from you before and always found them excellent quality. The service is speedy and efficient, the plants were quickly dispatched and arrived very well packaged and looking healthy. The guidelines that accompany the plants are clear and helpful, I always follow the advice to protect against slugs - essential with delphiniums! Thank you Sarah Raven, it's a pleasure to buy from you.
